MissionOut in Science strives to bridge the LGBTQ+ and scientific communities to strengthen them both and promote the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in science. We seek to accomplish this by increasing the visibility of LGBTQ+ scientists, fostering discussion between students and scientists, and offering individualized mentoring. We aim to prepare students for their next academic steps and to empower LGBTQ+ scientists to improve their communities.

Our storyWe are Zeke and Nicole, two graduate students at the University of Colorado, Anschutz medical campus. We started Out in Science to combat the underrepresentation of LGBTQ+ people in science by encouraging LGBTQ+ students to consider STEM careers. As LGBTQ+ scientists who area passionate about research and have found a home within the scientific community, we want to reach out to LGBTQ+ students and reassure them that there is a place for them too in STEM. Along the way, we hope to break down stereotypes and change the scientific environment as we discuss what it means to be out in science. We both have several years of teaching experience with high school students, and Zeke also worked as a college counselor, helping high school students apply to colleges. Out in Science stems from our desire to unite our passion for scientific research and teaching, and we both want to give back to our LGBTQ+ community.
We not only want to help students feel more confident with their individual identities, but also establish or drive their career aspirations and positively impact the STEM community as a whole. |
